SMS Test Standards

Surface Machine Systems provides a variety of in-house toll-testing services. Because the determination of the critical scratch phenomena is a device-independent process, SMS works to develop lab standards to help provide consistency in comparative scratch phenomena. The two areas in which SMS focuses are Onset of Critical Load, and Onset of Scratch Visibility.

When a scratch test is performed, we typically consider two types of features or phenomena in the resulting scratch. The first is Onset of Critical Load, and the second is Onset of Scratch Visibility.

The definition of each of these can and should vary depending on the type of polymer and the purpose of testing; SMS provides a starting point for many types of polymer scratch research.
