Stylii
The styli in your Scratch 4 machine is a consumable part, which will wear out with repeated use. Styli should be replaced with some regularity to ensure that tests are accurate and repeatable. The rate of wear for a styli is determined by the material composition of the styli, and the material under test. Although we can provide some guidelines for capacity of styli, there are many unique factors to your test environment that will effect this. For instance, running high loads, test hard materials, or testing abrasive materials may significantly compromise styli capacity.
You should always perform at least a visual inspect of your styli prior to running tests. If the styli appears flat or sharp, you should replace it. We keep most geometries in stock, ready for immediate shipment.
The Scratch 4 takes a replaceable shank stylus which can be built constructed to many geometries. Our basic stylii geometry meets the ASTM and ISO specifications for stainless steel ball stylii. Additionally, SMS offers other standard geometries, and custom geometries by request.
